Heart Attack: Know the Signs

Most heart attack deaths happen because people wait. Learn the signs — including the subtle ones — and act fast.

Emergency: If you or someone near you has symptoms right now, call 911 immediately. Do not drive yourself to the hospital.

Warning signs

Chest discomfortPressure, squeezing, fullness, or pain in the center of the chest lasting more than a few minutes — or going away and coming back.
Upper body painDiscomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw, or stomach.
Shortness of breathWith or without chest discomfort — often the very first sign.
Other signsBreaking out in a cold sweat, nausea, or lightheadedness.
In women Women are more likely to have subtler symptoms: unusual fatigue, shortness of breath, nausea, and back or jaw pain — sometimes without chest pain at all.

Lower your risk

Most heart attacks are the end result of risk factors that build for years — and nearly all of them can be measured and managed: high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, diabetes, excess weight, and inactivity.

A cardiac risk assessment with Dr. Kalafatic covers all of them in one visit: blood pressure, lipid panel, EKG, and a plan tailored to you.
